The first time that Muslims in Switzerland appear in the censuses of the Federal Statistical Office was in 1970 they were estimated at 16,000 out of a total population of 4.6 million. Before that, there were not enough.
In 2011, the SFO numbered the Muslim faithful at around 330,000 out of a total of 6.7 million Swiss, which is worth 4.9% of the total population.
56.4% of Muslims in Switzerland are nationals of the former Yugoslavia (especially Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Sandjak) who came during the wars of Bosnia (1992) and Kosovo (1999), in addition, 20.2% of them are from Turkey.
As for Arabic speakers, they represent only 5.6% of Muslims, according to the report of the GRIS (Swiss Islamic Research Group).
10,000 of the 330,000 Muslims living in Switzerland are converts and the majority (88.3%) are not Swiss citizens.
People of Muslim faith are predominantly settled in cities such as Zurich, Bern, Aargau, St. Gallen, Vaud and Geneva, a consequence of the waves of economic immigration of the Seventies.
