When Canada was created there were only 13 Muslims throughout the country, according to the first census of the Canadian Confederation in 1871.
In 1960, Canada changed its immigration policy and cancelled its preference for European immigration. It is precisely since this change that the Muslim population started to grow in number and percentage.
In 2011, the Muslim community stood at 1,053,945 according to the latest Canadian statistics, which represents 3.2% of the total population of the country.
In Canada, Islam represents the third religion, after Christianity and atheism. The majority of Canadian Muslims originate from India, Pakistan, Iran and Egypt. Many of them - estimated at 581,950 - live in Ontario, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area. Quebec has 243,430 Muslim individuals, coming mainly from Morocco, Algeria and Lebanon. The city of Ottawa, Canada's national capital, is also home to many Muslims, nearly 65,880, mostly Lebanese, South Asians and Somalis.
The emergence of the economy of both regions of Calgary and Edmonton resulted in a rapid growth of their Muslim populations, amounting respectively to 58,310 and 46,125.
